By Australia 4WD Action
When you start thinking about all of the top 4WD tracks, you soon realise just how many great destinations there are in this country. It doesn’t matter if you live on the eastern seaboard, the west coast or anywhere in between, as there are quality 4WD tracks within a tank of fuel away from all of us. Australia really is the 4WD country.
We have gathered everyone from Roothy, staff writers, freelancers, travel writers and local experts to make a list of all of the top 4WD tracks Australia wide. As you could imagine, our fi rst list of the best 4WD tracks was so long that we could have fi lled a book, so we had the tough job of culling that down to the 20 best, as voted by us.
Apart from getting the right people to give their experiences on the 20 best tracks, we included the important information that you need to drive these tracks yourself. This means contacts, what modifications you need, local information, route notes and all of the information that you would simply want to ask a fellow 4WDer. Each one of these 20 tracks is good enough to dedicate a magazine worth of pages to, but apparently a 5000-page issue was out of the question.

EcoMuseImages---2.jpg

Roothy(Australia 4WD Action

20.   STOCKTON BEACH, NSW
------WORDS BY SCOTT BUTLER
Now, this is the place to come if you really want to test your beach driving skills. Let’s see how much trouble you can get into with the wife sitting next to you and the kids laughing in the back seat! Jokes aside, this beach is a great daytrip and your whole family will thank you for it.

From some of the best beach fishing around to the hardest sand driving you will find in Oz, Stockton has it all. The monster sand dunes will dwarf even the largest of 4WDs and prove to be hours of entertainment for the kids. Just remember to pack a few pieces of cardboard and watch them go – who said you need to buy kids expensive toys!

Access: Northern entrance is via Paterson Drive Anna Bay up (200km from Sydney, 51km from Newcastle and 34km from Raymond Terrace). The southern entrance is via Lavis Lane, Williamtown (173km from Sydney, 26km from Newcastle and 15km from Raymond Terrace).

Warnings: Always check steep dunes on both sides before launching your 4WD over the top. Stay off the regeneration areas at all times. Lower your tyre pressures. Stockton is not recommended for trailers due to the very soft sand.

Modifications: Standard 4WDs can venture into Stockton without a problem, but you must carry a snatch strap, shovel, good air compressor, tyre gauge and travelling with a second 4WD is recommended.

Displaying a tall sand flag is also a must, as there can be a lot of 4WD traffic at Stockton on the weekends and public holidays.

Permits: You will need a permit to drive on the beach, $10 for a day or $30 for an annual permit. They are available from NPWS Hunter Region Offi ce (02) 4984 8200 and can also be purchased at the service centre at Lavis Lane before you drive onto the beach. This service station is also a great stop to fuel up after a day’s driving and has two air hoses and a wash bay.

Route: This is 32km of superb sand driving from the level sand close to the water to kilometres of massive unspoiled sand dunes.

         通过Williamtown(从悉尼173公里,纽卡斯尔和26公里)。

19. BRIDLE TRACK, NSW

WORDS BY FRED WRIGHT
If you’re looking for a 4WD adventure and you’re new or old to the game, then this is definitely the trip for you. Your wife and kids will love you for it, and it is part of learning what being an Aussie is all about.

Access: Via Sofala on 38km of unsealed road to Hill End. Via Mudgee – 72km through Hargraves (13km unsealed) to Hill End. Via Bathurst – 68km of narrow winding road. Not suitable for caravans and check with the Hill End Police if it’s been raining to see if the causeway is open and the many river crossings aren’t too deep to ford.

Options: If you wanted more to see around this area, you could always take the Dixon’s Long Point Road, which is very scenic and will bring you past Ophir gold diggings to Orange. Alternatively, if you’re partial to the taste of the grape, head to Mudgee for some of the best local wine in the country.

Warnings: No towing past Monagham’s Bluff, as this part of the track is very narrow and has lots of sharps corners while hugging a cliff face. Avoid this part of the track during heavy rain or during bushfires.

Modifications: All-terrain tyres are all you really need to tackle this track. A 50mm lift would be beneficial, but not essential. If the rivers are up, you will need a snorkel.

Permits: NA.

Route: This track closely follows the Macquarie River and is part of the original bullock wagon route from Bathurst. This was the direct route to the gold fields and was named because it was once so rough that riders had to dismount and lead their horses by the bridle.

The scenery is spectacular with sheer rock faces and magnificent camping/fishing spots dotted along the river. We recommend you spend at least two days camping along the track, specifically at Sailor’s Bluff or beside the Turon River near the causeway crossing.

Why not catch a trout, eat yabbies and kick back beside the river and enjoy the scenery while trying to imagine what life was life for the early pioneers!

18. DAVIES PLAINS TRACK, VIC

WORDS BY RICHARD UNMACK

The Davies Plain Track is one of the more remote drives through the Victorian High Country. Starting only a short distance from the headwaters of the Murray River, it meanders across high plains until meeting the Murray again about 40km further north, where it crosses the river into Tom Groggin Station camping area in the Kosciuszko National Park.

Access to Davies Plain Track from the south is via Omeo and Benambra. About an hour and a half from Omeo, travel via Limestone and Beloka roads before veering right onto Buckwong Track, which takes you onto the high plains through snow gum forests.
We camped at the Poplars (via McCarthys track) that has pit toilet facilities, fire pits and great swimming holes in the Murray River, which is little more than a fast-flowing creek here in the summer months.

Backtracking to the corner of Davies Plain Track, we turned right and stopped about 4km further on at Charlies Creek campground for morning tea, which has great grassed sites with some sheltering trees and fire pits but little else – perfect!

Davies Plain Track generally crosses the high plains at an elevation over 1500m, so apart from spectacular sights, you can be subject to sudden turns of weather, so be prepared. Typically, over the summer months it is fairly warm and dry, so sunblock is essential if you plan to be out of the vehicle a bit.

The track itself is an easy drive, with a couple of short sharp rises over rocky outcrops between the high plains. Low first is an easy crawl over these sections, and most standard vehicles will negotiate these with ease. Towing a camper trailer should not present a problem over this track with a suitably set up vehicle. There are a couple of small creeks to cross along the way, the most prominent being just to the north of Davies Plain Hut, which provides plenty of space for an overnight stay (pit dunnies and fire pits).

Some spectacular views are seen looking to the east along the northern half of the track across the Indi Wilderness Area acres of High Country wildflowers.

The last 10 or so kilometres of the track is through tall High Country ash forests – quite a change from the southern sections of open plains and snow gums. Winding its way down hill towards the mighty Murray, you are provided spectacular views of Mt Kosciuszko and Mt Townsend only 15 or so kilometres to the east.

Crossing a creek at Buckwong campground, you then pass a gate and shortly after arrive at the Murray River ford – most of the year it’s little more than 40cm at its deepest, but if unsure, it’s best to walk it first. The track then emerges onto Tom Groggin campground (which has pit toilets and plenty of space) then onto the Alpine Way – Jindabyne via Perisher 45km to the east and Khancoban about 50km to the north.

17. ELLIS TRACK, VIC

WORDS BY RICHARD UNMACK

Ellis Track is one of those tracks that all real 4WDs should experience, either as a driver or, for many, as a passenger.

Located on the outer eastern side of Melbourne, it includes some steep hills, massive rocks and huge ruts. During winter, the red clay becomes so slippery that it’s not uncommon to hear people having to winch their way from the start to finish of the track. It can take up to four hours or more to cover this 3.5km track in winter when it’s wet. That’s even if you have the most hardcore tyres, heaps of suspension flex and twin diff locks. There are many stories of people recovering their 4WD for 12 hours or more. In the wet be prepared for a daytrip to turn into a night run.

Accessed via Tarrango Rd just east of Yarra Junction, the first kilometre or so is relatively easy. Beginning quite flat, it then heads up a modest gradient over water-diversion mounds. If you have trouble with these, best bet is to turn around, as it only gets harder.

The first real climb offers two different routes: the hard rock-strewn track on the right also has exposed tree roots and large holes, so proper wheel placement is crucial. Vehicles should be well set up, with suspension lift and adequate underbody clearance and protection, as there is the very real chance of damage to bodywork or driveline.

As with a number of challenging sections, there is the alternative ‘chicken’ track, which while smoother is still quite steep, and in the wet the clay will provide next to no traction so a winch (or a mate with one) is a must.

There are several challenging steep rocky sections, and each has one more technical and difficult to the next, with the bonus of presenting opportunities of different lines within the same track.
We tackled this in the dry recently, and the vehicles were properly set up for such track conditions. Generally, our vehicles (two 25-year-old Jeeps) crawled the length of the track without too much issue. We did come across a Toyota shortie about two-thirds of the way along that was having difficulty with a heavily eroded rock-strewn section (we drove around). With no diff locks, he looked like he was going to be there for a while, at least until his mate either winched or snatched him through.
If you have a 4WD that is set up for tackling such tracks and want to get your money’s worth out of your recovery gear, then give Ellis Track a go. It might take you a month of Sundays to clean the mud out from under your 4WD, but you will never be able to wipe the smile away from your face!

had a chance to visit Tom Groggin Station - very well known property in that area, this cattle farm has got about 2,000 acres land. it has got some fantastic view, i am sure you can get some pretty good shot.

unfortunately, this farm is privately owned, can't just drive in freely.

16. BYFIELD NATIONAL PARK, QLD

WORDS BY SHAUN WHALE

Central Queensland is a 4WDing mecca with endless bush and beach tracks you could spend a lifetime exploring. The pick of the crop is Byfield National Park, 30km north of Yeppoon. Stop into the BP service station in Yeppoon to get your permit to drive on the beach and camp, or alternatively there is a self-register board in the national park.

Once you enter Byfield NP, you will be greeted with a corrugated dirt road that you need to follow for about 11km until you get to Stoney Creek. You can camp here if you like or take advantage of the gas BBQs for lunch and cool off in the freshwater creek with no fear of crocodiles or stingers. A ‘must stop’ if you visit during the summer months.

While you can camp here, it’s best to travel further into the park and camp along 9 Mile Beach and find a nice place on the beach to set up camp. If you travel off-peak, chances are you will have the entire beach to yourself.

There are a lot of 4WD tracks in Byfield, and it’s worth exploring them as there are a lot of hidden gems off the beaten track. Make sure you explore Corio Bay, Stockyard Point and Five Rocks as a bare minimum. Be sure to bring the fishing gear, as a feed of fish is definitely on the cards. This is a great place to spend a week if you really want to explore the area, or even a weekend if you are looking for a place to stop on the way to the Cape.

The tracks are mostly sandy and can be quite steep in places with very soft sand. Although stock vehicles will make it, a mild suspension lift is a good idea as the wheel ruts can be deep in places.

15. LANCELIN TO CERVANTES 4WD TRACK

WORDS BY GRAHAM CAHILL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ECOMUSE IMAGES

One of the last remaining legal sections of 4WD coastal access close to the capital, the Lancelin to Cervantes 4WD track has long been a popular weekend getaway for many 4WDers in Perth.

The track starts at the northern end of the Lancelin off-road area, or as the locals call it, the Lancelin dunes. It’s not signposted, and there are several offshoots that make navigation tricky. However, most of the diversions end up at the same spot: the shantytown of shacks and semi-permanent coastal dwellings that make up Wedge. From here, the track is much easier to follow, passing another small shantytown named Grey before ending abruptly just shy of the town of Cervantes. This is by no means a hardcore track, but it is a great, fun drive.

However, the sand can be very soft and many vehicles have been lost to incoming tides in this area. Track conditions can range from that soft sand right through to high-speed dirt sections. All vehicles should carry an air compressor, plus basic recovery tools such as a shovel and a snatch strap. There is a designated off-road-use area at the southern end of the track comprised of large, steep sand dunes. It’s a popular recreational area for any off-road vehicle owner and can get busy during peak periods.

Fuel and supplies are available in Lancelin at the start of the track and also in Cervantes at the end. The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) should be your first port of call for info on the surrounding parks and entrance conditions. Visitwww.dec.wa.gov.au for more information.

The Lancelin Tourist Centre can help out with advice on track conditions and access concerns, and can be called on (08) 9655 1100. No permits are required to travel this track, but you are not allowed to cross the Defence Force bombing range during live firing exercises (for obvious reasons). You can telephone to check the status of the live fi ring range before leaving home to determine if the area is passable by calling (08) 9655 1100.

The heat of summer is offset by the lure of the ocean always within easy reach, but the downside of course is the crowds. Winter has its attractions too, with virtually no crowds and much greener bushlands. During the colder months, the relentless strong sea breeze (gales!) are not as forceful. Total distance travelled is less than 100km, even if you allow for some geographical embarrassment and a bit of a detour into the dunes at the start of the track.

It’s possible that by the time you read this, the track may be on its last legs. Development, a northern access highway and caravan park are all earmarked or in progress, each threatening the future of this iconic Perth 4WD track. Get on it while you can.

14. BIG RED TRACK, GLASSHOUSE MOUNTAINS, QLD

WORDS BY GARY ELLIS

The Glasshouse Mountains are within earshot of Brisbane, only 20km north of Caboolture. Captain Cook originally named the mountains and now they are famous for their great lookouts, scenery and easy daily driven trips.

However, ask a local with a well-built 4WD what they enjoy about the area and I bet lookouts won’t even get a mention. Hidden amongst the trees and powerlines are a myriad of tracks ranging from easy to extreme. It really is one of South-East Queensland’s best-kept 4WD secrets.

On any given weekend you will find a convoy of 4WDs heading out for a challenging drive through some spectacular scenery. For 4WD enthusiasts, the pick of the bunch, and also one of the more difficult tracks, is known as Big Red. Nope, you won’t find any sand dunes on this track, but it’s a must-drive for anyone looking for a solid challenge. Big Red will certainly put you and your vehicle to the test.

Getting to the mountains from Brisbane, follow the Bruce Highway and turn off onto Steve Irwin Way. The mountains are around 30 minutes drive from Brisbane’s northern suburbs. The Big Red track can be found when you take the signposted main track into the Glasshouse Mountains and continue to the powerline tracks. All up, the track should take you from 3–5 hours depending on how many vehicles in your convoy and how many times you test your recovery gear.

Modifications: in the dry some mud-terrain tyres and a well-setup suspension package could see you crawl your way through this track. If there has been recent rain it will be a completely different story, and a locker or two and some barwork would be essential.

13. GIBB RIVER ROAD, WA

WORDS BY GRAHAM CAHILL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ECOMUSE IMAGES

The Gibb is Western Australia’s most famous and iconic Kimberley 4WD experience. It’s got everything – river crossings, endless corrugations, stunning scenery and isolated, pristine campsites. It was constructed toward the end of the 1800s as a means of moving cattle between Derby and Wyndham. Tourism now accounts for virtually all of the track use, but it is still used by outlying stations as the soul means of vehicular access.

The traditional start-finish points for the Gibb are the towns of Kununurra in the north and Derby in the south. Supplies and fuel en route can be obtained from Kununurra, Mt Barnett Roadhouse, Imintji Roadhouse, El Questro Station and Derby. Further information and contact details for the above can be found by calling the Kununurra Visitors Centre on 1800 586 868.

The Gibb is closed during the wet season, re-opening sometime around May and remaining so until the onset of the wet again around November. It pays to check as seasons vary and so too do opening/closing dates. The track is closed to all bar local traffic during the wet season due to impassable rivers and washaways.

Total trip distance is around 900km. However, this can be considerably more should you wish to explore the numerous attractions off the Gibb. The availability of fuel at the stations and roadhouses along the track mean fuel range is no longer a considerable issue. Most well-equipped 4WDs will have adequate range.

The Gibb is long, dusty, hot and rough on vehicles thanks to the million-odd corrugations. That said, it gets graded before opening and often again mid season, so any moderately equipped truck with basic touring capabilities will have few dramas. Correct tyre pressures will go a long way toward preventing damage, as the Gibb can be hard on tyres. There are no permits required to travel the length of the Gibb, but any travel onto Aboriginal land will often require special permission.

12. COFFIN BAY, SA

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREG CARTAN

Coffin Bay NP is a small peninsula that has magnificent beaches perfect for swimming, fishing, boating or just playing, and the tracks offer some excellent 4WDing. This is one destination to visit if relaxed beach camping and excellent 4WDing is your cup of tea.

The park covers a peninsula to the west of Coffin Bay township at the bottom of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. The drive wanders beside some rugged coastline, through sand dunes, over rocky sections and along Seven Mile Beach. Allow sufficient fuel for about 200km. Vehicles don’t need any special mods, but the sand does get soft so make sure you can handle those conditions.

What are the best things about this park? Well, there are great camping sites right on the water and it is an absolutely magnificent stretch of water. There’s plenty to do, including fi shing, bushwalking, boating, 4WDing, or alternatively just kicking back and soaking it up. Finally, the scenery is breathtaking – from the crystal-clear still waters of the estuary to the thumping surfs; from the flat limestone stretches to the towering cliffs. It really is a brilliant spot.

All the information you need is on the web at www.parks.sa.gov. au or ring the Port Lincoln Offi ce of DEH on (08) 8688 3111. A permit is required, and the entry fee is $7.50 per vehicle plus $5 per night. The best time to visit is the warmer weather, ’cause the water is the big drawcard.

11. ENGLAND TRACK, COFFS HARBOUR

WORDS BY SHAUN WHALE

The Coffs Coast has some of the best 4WDing on the east coast of Australia. There are not too many places with such a diverse range of tracks right on your doorstep. From the beach to the bush and from easy to diff-ripping tough, Coffs has something for everyone.

It’s not hard to find a decent 4WD track in Coffs – all you have to do is drive five minutes out of town in any direction and you will come across a myriad of dirt roads. And within a five-minute drive from the town centre, you can be lifting a wheel in a rutted muddy track and reaching behind the seat for that trusty snatch strap.

One of these tracks in particular starts just south of town after you take a turn down Englands Road, as if you were heading to Bunnings. Instead of heading into the hardware store, continue down the road and after a few kilometres the road, it turns into a dirt track not long before becoming a rutted muddy track that climbs the side of a mountain.

In the dry this place is generally slippery, as the clay doesn’t take long to fill the tread of even the most aggressive tyre tread. During the wet, you’d better make sure you have your recovery gear in good order as you will surely get to use it.

Off the side of the main track you will see other tracks (if you can call them that) that will test out the toughest 4WDs getting around. One in particular featured slippery clay ruts that ventured up a steep incline had a broken snatch strap marking the start of this track. In the soft clay, you could clearly see the marks of an aggressive mud-terrain tyre that has climbed its way on its sidewall up the massive ruts.

If you have a few days on your hands and a GPS with you, this track can be taken with a maze of other dirt roads through to Dorrigo and north to a magical campground called Platypus Flats.

10. 75 MILE BEACH, FRASER ISLAND

WORDS BY GARY ELLIS

Being the world’s largest sand island, Fraser Island is a must-drive destination for all 4WDers.

If the idea of driving along one of the longest and most beautiful beaches sounds appealing, then you can’t go past the 75 Mile Beach track. The pristine sands of the east side of Fraser Island have some of the best sand 4WDing and camping available in Australia. Most 4WDs with a low-range gearbox and good quality tyres will have no problems along this stretch of beach. Just remember to have your recovery points and equipment sorted and in good order.

Like all beach driving, be sure to check the tides and travel as close to the low-tide line as possible, as this is the easiest way to travel. A second vehicle travelling with you is not necessary but will usually be welcomed should something go wrong.

How to get there: travel to Rainbow Beach (225km north of Brisbane). If you have not already purchased a vehicle access permit, you will need to organise one from www.epa.qld.gov.auor pick up one from the Rainbow Beach QPWS, Manta Ray Barges or Rainbow Beach. The permit will cost $38.25 and is valid for one month.

From Rainbow Beach, continue along to Inskip point. From there you will be able to catch a vehicle barge to Hook Point, Fraser Island. Barges depart on demand between 6am and 5.30pm, and the cost is $90 return per vehicle. Visi

When you arrive at Hook Point, you will drive approx 19.7km to the access point to the 75 Mile Beach track. Once on the 75 Mile Beach track continue north to Eli Creek. Eli Creek is a must-stop during your drive up the 75 Mile Beach track. This is a great place to stop for a refreshing swim in a great freshwater stream.

After leaving Eli Creek continue along north until you come to the Maheno Ship Wreck. If you are travelling with kids, the Maheno shipwreck is another must stop. The kids will absolutely love looking at this amazing old shipwreck. It’s a great place for lunch and to put your camera through its paces!

Once you have finished exploring the Maheno, continue north to Indian Head (tracks north of Indian Head are now prohibited). From Indian Head you can visit the champagne pool and explore what Fraser Island has to offer. Grab your camera and capture the native wildlife, flora and fauna of the Island.

After departing Indian Head, turn back travelling south along 75 Mile Beach track back to Lake Wabby, which is only one of the 40 freshwater lakes on Fraser Island.

You can visit Fraser Island in a weekend, but you won’t do this place justice unless you spend at least a week exploring the area. There are many camping options available on the island and fuel is available (but very expensive). Visit www.epa.qld.gov.au for camping options and prices. Depending on the tides, how soft or hard the sand is and how much exploring you want to do, will dictate your fuel requirements. It’s a good idea to carry a total of 100L of fuel if you can.

We have only touched on the many places to visit along 75 Mile Beach and Fraser Island. With over 40 freshwater lakes, abundant rainforests, sand cliffs and sand blows, Fraser Island is a truly remarkable island and a must-visit destination for every 4WDer!
