Moving to Peoria, Illinois has overall been a great experience for me. However, one major component of my life has been consistently missing since I left Texas... my Electric Vehicle; JeepEV. Due to logistics, including the drastic cost associated with transporting a vehicle 1200+ miles, JeepEV remained with my family in Texas for the past 3 years. Unfortunately, the Jeep sat unused in my mom's garage for about the last year and a half due to battery issues (see below.)
My mom continued to drive the Jeep as long as she could, but problems associated with the dying battery pack prevented her from driving EV as much as she wanted to. As of this writing the original Trojan T-875 batteries, now 6 years old, are still installed in the Jeep. The batteries are at the end of their useful life, suffering from sulfation, high internal resistance, and drastically lowered storage capacity.
The batteries relatively short life span came as little surprise to myself and others involved with the JeepEV conversion process. We learned, mostly retrospectively to the conversion, that the Trojan 8-Volt flooded lead-acid batteries were a poor choice for the JeepEV due to its high-power demands. The hot Texas climate and our desire to drive the Jeep the full distance possible caused additional stress to the Trojan batteries, likely accelerating their demise.
